Educating College Men on Consent and Healthy Masculinity

May 18, 2026

College campuses are often where young adults begin building a deeper understanding of relationships, independence, and personal responsibility. For many students, it is the first time they are navigating social situations without direct guidance from parents or longtime support systems. That makes college an important time to talk openly about consent, respect, and healthy masculinity.

Conversations about sexual assault prevention in higher education shouldn’t be aimed at criticizing masculinity or placing blame on men. Instead, they should help students develop the communication skills, emotional awareness, and confidence needed to build healthy relationships and contribute to safer campus communities.

Understanding Consent Beyond “Yes” and “No”

Many students understand consent in a general sense, but there are still common misunderstandings about what it looks like in real-life situations.

Consent Should Be Clear and Ongoing

Consent is not simply the absence of “no.” It should be clear, mutual, informed, and ongoing. A person can change their mind at any point, and consent should never be assumed based on silence, relationship status, or past experiences.

Communication Matters

College environments can sometimes complicate communication. Alcohol, peer pressure, and social expectations may make it harder for students to recognize boundaries or speak openly.

With consent education, students benefit from learning how to communicate clearly, check in respectfully, and recognize when someone may not be comfortable.

Rethinking Traditional Ideas About Masculinity

Conversations about consent are often connected to larger discussions about masculinity and social expectations.

Many young men grow up hearing messages that encourage them to hide emotions, avoid vulnerability, or prove themselves through dominance or risk-taking behaviors.

While expectations may seem harmless at first, they create unhealthy pressure that affects friendships, dating relationships, and emotional well-being.

Healthy masculinity offers a different approach. It involves empathy, accountability, emotional honesty, and respect for others. It reminds students that strength is not defined by aggression or control.

Why College Campuses Play an Important Role

Students Learn From Their Environment

Residence halls, athletic programs, fraternities, and student organizations all help shape the social experiences students have every day. When colleges actively promote respectful behavior and healthy communication, they help create environments where students feel safer and more supported.

Educational Programs Can Create Positive Change

Workshops, orientation sessions, and peer-led discussions give students practical tools they can apply in real situations. Effective programs move beyond lectures and encourage honest conversations about accountability, bystander intervention, communication, and healthy relationships.

Programs are often more effective when students feel engaged rather than judged. Young men are more likely to participate meaningfully when discussions are realistic, relatable, and focused on growth.

Positive Role Models Matter

Coaches, professors, mentors, and student leaders can help normalize healthy behaviors by modeling respect, emotional awareness, and accountability.

When students see those qualities encouraged and valued, it becomes easier to challenge harmful stereotypes and support positive change within peer groups.
